USL User Guide

Introduction

This guide is designed to help prospective students successfully navigate the University of Sierra Leone’s online application and admissions process. It combines steps from both the USL Application Portal and the USL Admission Portal so you can move from creating your account to receiving your admission offer with confidence.

Whether you are applying for the first time or returning to continue your academic journey, this guide walks you through each stage: setting up your profile, exploring programs, submitting your application, making payments, checking status, and accepting your admission.

All you need is a valid Gmail account, the required documents, a passport-size photo, and an internet-enabled device. The rest is covered here, step by step.

Purpose

Help applicants register, complete their application, and track its progress through the University of Sierra Leone’s online system.

Audience

New applicants and returning applicants continuing or updating a previous application to the University of Sierra Leone.

  • Reliable internet access
  • A valid Gmail address
  • A payment voucher

Getting Started

Step 1: Open the Admissions Portal

  • Visit https://admissions.usl.edu.sl/
  • On the homepage, click Menu (top right corner).
  • At the bottom of the menu, select Register if you are a new user or Log In if you are an existing user.

Create a New Account

Fill in the registration form:

  • Email Address – must be valid and accessible.
  • Phone Number – include your country code (e.g., +232).
  • First, Middle, and Surname – use your legal name as shown on official documents (NCRA ID, Passport, WAEC Results, etc.).

  • Continue by entering your Surname and Full Name
  • Complete the Math Question (CAPTCHA) to confirm you are human.
  • Click Create New Account to proceed.

Email Notification

  • After registration, you will receive an email from USL Admission Portal.

  1. The email contains:

    • Your username

    • A link to set your password (this link must be used only once).

  2. Open the email, click the link, and create a secure password.

  1. After clicking the link in your email, you’ll see a page titled Set Password.

  2. This is a one-time login screen. Click Log in to proceed.

  3. Click Log in to continue.

  1. On the password setup page, scroll down to the password fields to enter your new password in both fields:

    1. Password – choose a strong password that you can remember.

    2. Confirm Password – retype the same password.

  2. Once both fields match, you will see confirmation that “Passwords match.”

  1. Scroll down and click "Save" to save the changes.

Once logged in, click Menu, which will expand to include:

  1. Applicant Dashboard

  2. My Account

  3. Log Out

  4. Register

Complete the Application Form

  1. Choose Apply: Undergraduate or Apply: Postgraduate, depending on your program.

  2. The Application Form will open with multiple steps displayed in a progress bar at the top.

  3. Each step must be completed before moving to the next.

  4. Provide all required information across the 14 steps.

  1. Enter your Transaction ID/Receipt/Batch Number from the bank.
  2. Select the Bank Name from the dropdown.
  3. Click Next to continue or Save Draft to finish later.
  4. Select "Choose File" to upload a scanned copy of the receipt (JPG, PNG, PDF – max 4 MB).

  1. Select your Student Category from the dropdown.

  2. Indicate if this is your first time applying for admission.

  3. Click Next to continue, or Save Draft to return later.

  1. Click Choose File to upload a recent passport-style photo.

  2. Allowed formats: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG (max 4 MB).

  3. This photo will be used for your Student ID Card.

  • Fill in your First Name, Other Names, and Surname.

  • Enter Your Date of Birth.

  1. The format is MM/DD/YYYY (Month/Day/Year).
  2. Click the calendar icon to open the date picker.
  3. Use the arrows or dropdown to select the year, then the month, and finally the day.
  4. The chosen date will appear automatically in the field.

  3. Home District

  4. Place of Work (if applicable)

  5. Occupation (select from the dropdown)

  1. Select your Occupation from the dropdown (or leave as None if not applicable).

  2. Choose your Religion.

  3. Indicate if you have a Disability (Yes/No).

  2. Enter your ID Number.

  3. If available, provide your NCRA NIN.

    • WAEC API (recommended for most results).

    • Scratch Card Method (only for older 2015/2016 results not available via WAEC API).

  2. Select your Result Status (e.g., One Sitting or Two Sittings).

  4. Click Next to continue or Save Draft to return later.

  1. Indicate if your Guarantor is the same as your Parent/Guardian/Next of Kin/Referee.

  2. Select the Type of Guarantor (e.g., Parent, Sponsor, Other).

  3. Enter the Amount they will support you with.

  4. Click Next to continue or Save Draft to return later.

  1. Click Upload Required Files to attach your documents (e.g., certificates, transcripts, ID, etc.).

  2. Ensure each file is clear and within the allowed size/format.

  3. Use Preview to review before submission.

  4. Click Next to continue or Save Draft to return later.

  1. After reviewing your details, click Submit to finalize your application.

  2. If you’re not ready, use Save Draft to return later.

  3. Use Previous to go back and edit, or Reset to clear the form.

  4. Once submitted, you will see a confirmation message and may receive an email acknowledgment.
